The Yaesu/Vertex Standard VXA-300 Pilot III is successor to the well known VXA-210, with some interesting features added. The VXA-300 is a compact, rugged handheld transceiver with VOR navigation and 5 watts peak transmit power, an 8-digit alphanumeric display with background lighting (also for the keypad) and 250 memory channels. The nav commands (TO/FROM, radial, course deviation) are shown in the display.

The VXA-300 features a rechargable NiMH with negligible memory effect and a choice between 25- and 8,33-kHz frequency spacing. Included are the NiMH battery, a 220-Volt charger with desktop stand, a "rubber duck" antenna, an adaptor for aviation headsets and a belt clip.
