Garmin GPSMAP 496
|
Top of the Line
|
Garmin's GPSMAP 496 comes in the same form factor as the 296, but features a much improved readability of the bright display well readable even in direct sunlight, with a diagonal measuring 9,5 cm, 256 colors and exceptional 480x320 pixel resolution. The chart display with terrain awareness is now even more detailed, the new features "Show Airspace" and "Smart Airspace" don't show airspace above a selectable altitude or show airspace relevant to your current flight altitude in bold. The faster processor allows five display updates per second. VFR reporting points as well as obstacles higher than 300 feet are shown for Europe. The street navigation package for Europe is included in the price. In the following, we will introduce you to the included accessories and the features of the GPSMAP 496 in detail.

Mapping Options
|
The GPSMAP 496 is delivered with a background map for the "Atlantic" area including Europe, which shows borders, major roads, rivers and lakes, cities and so on in a detail level suitable for air navigation in all zoom levels. Also, terrain is shown according to elevation in a green/brown shading similar to paper charts. Obstacles higher than 300 feet are also shown.
In addition, the unit includes the Jeppesen Database "Atlantic", which shows airfields with frequencies and (in many cases) runway information, airspace, VORs, NDBs and intersetions. An update to the Jeppesen database is made available every 28 days. The update can be done whenever desired and is most easily done by download from Garmin's site to a PC and subsequent transfer via the included USB cable. Currently, a one-time update is 35 US dollars, a one-year subscription is 295 US dollars (for 13 updates).
Additional digital maps on CD can be bought and transferred to memory cards via PC. Maps similar to the included CityNavigator street maps are available for other areas of the world. Spoken turn-by-turn instructions ("turn left" or similar) are played through a speaker integrated into the cigarette lighter.
Furthermore, Garmin's BlueChart series is available for marine navigation in many parts of the world. Please ask us about details and prices.
