The GPSMAP 196 features a 12-greyscale display measuring 9,65 cm in the diagonal and 320x240 pixel resolution. The map display is supplemented by a Cockpit-Panel display, which offers a GPS-derived display of the instruments. The GPSMAP 196 can be expanded to a capable car and marine navigator. Mapping Options

The GPSMAP 196 is delivered with a background map for the "Atlantic" area including Europe, which shows borders, major roads, rivers and lakes, cities and so on in a detail level suitable for air navigation in all zoom levels.

In addition, the unit includes the Jeppesen Database "Atlantic", which shows airfields with frequencies and (in many cases) runway information, airspace, VORs, NDBs and intersetions. An update to the Jeppesen database is made available every 28 days. The update can be done whenever desired and is most easily done by download from Garmin's site to a PC and subsequent transfer via the included USB cable. Currently, a one-time update is 35 US dollars, a one-year subscription is 295 US dollars.

Additional digital maps on CD can be bought and transferred to memory cards via PC. This procedure is also used for the MapSource City Select Europe CD with road maps. Similar maps are available for other areas of the world. Turn-by-turn instructions can be enabled with these maps, albeit not spoken.

The Cockpit-Panel display offers a GPS-derived backup for the most important instruments. HSI in the center, flanked by ground speed, altitude, vertical speed and turn indicator.

The logbook feature saves take-off and landing locations together with flight times. These entries can be transferred to the PC with a free software available at Garmin's website.
